"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". The exhibition "Walking Art: History, Art and Fashion of Italian Shoes", sponsored by the Italian Consulate General in Guangzhou and Shenzhen Hua Art Museum, is currently on display in Shenzhen Hua Art Museum. More than 150 pairs of shoes spanning the past two or three thousand years have evolved into the art and history of human walking.

Ancient Roman shoes also have "fashion elements"

According to reports, the exhibition has brought more than 150 pairs of "foot history" spanning more than 2000 years, as far as the "gladiator shoes" of the ancient Greek and Roman Empire period, and the latest collection of famous brand handmade in recent summer. The shoe exhibition from Italy can also make the audience feel the exquisite craft of shoemaking in this country and its penetrating cultural customs.

The curator and Italian architect Luciano Carroso described the significance of shoes: "The use of shoes is a revolution, but also human needs, so that human beings and animals are distinguished." Shoes are inherently designed to protect their feet from uneven ground and weather conditions, he said.

Reporters saw at the scene, the earliest shoes are just straps tied to the feet, strap shoes are the first use of human manual skills of shoes. Ancient Greeks wore strap shoes for men and women (see right), mostly made of leather. Men mainly wear metal upper-calf boots.

The shoes of ancient Greece and Rome on display are not unfamiliar, because this summer's most fashionable cross-strap sandals originate from their originality. It turns out that the ankle-binding shoes that young girls like to wear today are the original shape of shoes.

Shoe colour shows people's rank

Just as shoes are the representative of prestige at the beginning of their appearance, "shoes" can also be classified into different classes, which can also show a person's living conditions. During the Roman Empire, only the emperor could decorate shoes with red, while married women wore golden lace shoes. In the 15th century, farmers and ordinary civilians mainly wore clogs. In the 18th century, boots began to be used only for military purposes, so soldiers could wear them. On the exhibition site, only women from noble and wealthy families can wear shoes made of velvet and brocade to attend various banquets. Curator Luciano Carroso pointed to a pair of red shoes at the scene and told reporters, "This is only worn by clergymen."

In addition, another feature that highlights the identity of shoe owners is the fineness of their decoration. Reporters saw on the scene, some shoes are very simple and unadorned, monotonous color, and some shoes are decorated with lace flowers, golden copper buttons and so on, it seems magnificent and noble. "This is what senior officers wear," the curator told reporters, pointing to a pair of high boots with rows of copper buttons.

The evolution of shoes is closely related to local customs. High-heeled shoes are not meant to set off the beautiful curve of women at first, but to have very practical value, in order to protect the skirt from being dirty. Despite its long history, fashionable styles related to the history and culture of that time can still find similar shadows in contemporary life. This is the charm of shoes, which is always related to comfort and texture.
